Movies and US History

Dear Readers,

Writing a first post is no easy task. So, after thinking about it for 2 weeks, I thought I might as well start and see what happens… and here I am.

There are many great suggestions on the Web about the use of movies in the classroom. Here are 2 blogs that I myself follow:

I would like to have suggestions about movies and songs we could use in class to give students glimpses of American and British Culture. The intention is to show students a little about these two English speaking countries.

Suggestions are VERY welcome! You could suggest a part of a movie or song that could tell us a bit about how people used to dress like or live or speak at a certain time or region; or maybe segments that picture a time in the History of those countries…

To give my first contribution, I’d like to show you a 3-minute segment of the movie The Grapes of Wrath, adapted from John Steinbeck’s book. As a suggestion, we could use this segment to show students how life was, in Oklahoma, around the Wall Street Crash of 1929. We could also address the Tenant System and its failure, the Dust Bowl, The language, the hopes of people, their migration to California, to name a few possibilities.

The situation described in the movie was also sung by many singers, and I particularly love Bruce Springsteen and Tom Morello's version bellow (downloaded from You Tube). In class, we could work with students by having them try and match parts of the song with excerpts from the movie or segments.

Well, this is it for now, and I hope to hear from you soon. Remember: all suggestions are very welcome!
